We, UHUG (Ukrainians Helping Ukrainians Galway), are deeply shocked and concerned by the tragic events that took place on October 15 in Dublin, resulting in the death of a Ukrainian teenager.

We express our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and call on law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation and bring those responsible to justice.

This tragedy has shaken the entire Ukrainian community in Ireland and raised serious questions about the safety of children and adolescents who, fleeing war and destruction, seek refuge in Ireland and fall into the care of state structures.

We call on TUSLA – Child and Family Agency to conduct a thorough review of all safety procedures related to the placement and supervision of refugee children, so that such tragedies do not happen again in the future.

The safety of children is the highest value that must be unconditionally guaranteed by all those involved in their protection.

We also call on government structures, local authorities and partner organizations to strengthen control, support and coordination in the field of social support for Ukrainian children and adolescents who are in the care of the Irish state.

Our community is ready to work together to ensure dignified and safe conditions for every Ukrainian child in Ireland.
