Ireland has opened its hearts to people fleeing war. But behind the fine words lies a difficult reality for those who want to help. We know this because we’ve been there ourselves.
The official accommodation system is no longer sufficient, as despite three years of war, the situation there is only worsening, and even those who so desperately held on there for all these years are leaving Ukraine. Meanwhile, support programs are being curtailed, and only the Irish themselves can help those seeking a new home. Continuing the centuries-old tradition of supporting other countries, which shapes the welcoming character of the nation.
At UHUG, we see every day that the Irish want to help. But we also see families stuck in accommodation centers because the promised housing isn’t available or the process is slow.
We’re reaching out to you directly: if you have a free house, apartment, or holiday home, your help is needed now more than ever.
What makes us different?
UHOME is a project created by a community of people who have already gone through this process. We understand the entire process and have experience. We will help you navigate the real process, prepare, and receive the support promised by the government (including a tax-free €600 per month or a home renovation grant, if needed), without unnecessary complications.
We take responsibility for finding you a good, honest family, overcoming the language barrier, assisting with paperwork, and any other difficulties that arise along the way.
The only requirement for participation in this program is that your home is not registered as a rental property.
Contact us, and we will provide you with honest advice and support based on real-world experience.
Your local authority manages the process, and UHUG supports you.
Welcome to our support network. Our role is to assist both Property Owners (Hosts) and Beneficiaries (Guests) throughout this arrangement. Below, you will find key information to help ensure a positive and clear experience for everyone involved.
The formal agreement between you is called a "Licence Agreement." A key element of this is the Licence Period, which must be clearly stated in the document.
· Our Support: We can provide you with template agreements and guide you on how to complete them correctly.
· Looking Ahead: The initial period can be extended, but this requires the mutual agreement of both the Host and the Guest. We are here to facilitate that conversation when the time comes.
Having questions or facing difficulties is completely normal. Please remember, you are not alone in this process.
· Our Commitment: Our dedicated team is available to both Hosts and Guests to offer information, advice, and practical support at any stage of the arrangement.
· Contact Us: If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. info@uhug.ie
We encourage open communication about household costs from the very beginning.
· Our Recommendation: It is standard and reasonable for the Guests to pay for or contribute to the utility bills (electricity, gas, internet, etc.) for the duration of their stay. We advise you to discuss and agree on this clearly at the outset to avoid misunderstandings.
· Practical Support for Guests: If our Guest beneficiaries need assistance transferring utility bills into their names, we can connect them with helpful services such as Citizens Information or local support groups.
We want to reassure our generous Hosts about the requirements.
· The Rule: For the type of stand-alone, unoccupied accommodation we are facilitating, Garda vetting is not required for the property owner.
· Our Role: We provide this clarity to give our Hosts peace of mind and simplify the process of offering a safe haven.
Our ultimate goal is to ensure a supportive, respectful, and successful experience for both the hosts opening their homes and the guests seeking safety. We are here to help you every step of the way.
